Significant Places: The Nine Islands of Navadvip

Every island is separated by a tributary of Ganges river. On each of these islands Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates performed Their transcendental pastimes. Later Vaishnava Acaryas – Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, Gaura Kisora Babaji, Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Jagannatha Das Babaji, Vasudeva Dutta and others spent several years of their lives here discussing the pastimes of Gaura and Nitai. These islands are accessible by boat. There are scattered forests and orchards filled with mango, jackfruit, bael and pomegranate trees. As well as many banana patches and flowering beds filled with varieties of birds. The winding paths and roadways lead to many villages where the inhabitants always speak the names of Gauranga and Nityananda.
Besides the Nine Island we offer full day guided tours of nearby pilgrimage sites, such as Ambka Kalna, Katwa, and Ekachakra Dham.

1. Sri Mayapur:

Sri Mayapur is beautifully situated on the banks of the Ganges it is a place for spiritual tourism. A place for relaxation & rejuvenation for your mind & soul. This project includes a Vedic planetarium describing the universe according to the Vedic cosmology.

2. Sri Simantadvipa:

This island was also known as Simuliya-grama and is located south of the Ganga. It is described in Sri Navadvipa Dham Mahatmya, once upon a time during Satya-yuga, Lord Shiva started to dance chanting the holy name of Lord Gauranga. Goddess Parvati asked Mahadeva, “What is this name, Gauranga, that you are chanting, and which is causing you to dance? My heart is melting to see your wonderful dance and to hear you’re chanting of the name of Gauranga. Until now all the mantras and tantras I have heard simply give troubles and problems to the living entities. Kindly tell me about Gauranga. I will make my life successful by worshiping Gauranga.” By seeing her Spiritual ecstasy lord Shiva described how the lord would appear in Kali Yuga as Lord Caitanya accepting the mood of Srimati Radharani. He will take birth in Mayapur from the womb of Sachi Devi. Lord Caitanya will spread the Nama Sankirtana and will distributed the Krishna Prema Without considering any qualification. He said “I am floating in the ocean of love remembering the promise of my Lord. I could not control my mind and have left my place called Kashi dhama (Varanasi). I have decided to stay near the border of Mayapur on the bank of the Ganga. There I will stay in a cottage while engaging in Gauranga Bhajana.”

After hearing this from Mahadeva, Parvati immediately came to Simantadvipa. She started to chant the holy name of Gaura with great love, meditating on Sri Gauranga. After a few days, Lord Gauranga Mahaprabhu mercifully appeared in front of Parvati Devi along with all His associates. His body was tall and the color of molten gold. His head was covered with gently curling locks hair and his limbs were very attractive and with radiant smiling face Lord Gauranga asked, “My dear Parvati! Please tell Me why you have come here?” Parvati fell at the feet the Lord Gauranga and Said “You have engaged me to keep all living entities who are averse to You in the bondage of material existence. I am engaged in that service and deprived of Your unlimited Prema. People say, wherever there is Krishna, Maya cannot stay. As a result, I am always distant from You. 0 my Lord, how can I see Your pastimes? Unless You show me the path, I am hopeless.”

Saying this, Parvati Devi took the dust from the lotus feet of Lord Gauranga and very eagerly placed it on her head in the Simanta (the middle portion of the hair just above the forehead of ladies is known as Sinthi or Simanta).

Gaurasundara was very pleased with Parvati and told her how as Yogamaya, she was non-different from Him and essential for His pastimes in the material realm. “In Vrindavana you are personally present as Paurnamasi, and in Navadvipa you are present as Praudha Maya along with Ksetrapala Shiva, the guardian of the dhama.”

This pastime took place at the Simanti Devi temple located on this island. Parvati stays here as the goddess of Simantadvipa and stays in Mayapur as Praudha Maya. On this Island is also the History of Lord Jagannath which is not different from Sri Nilacala Dham (Jagannath Puri) himself and other significant history.

4. Sri Madhyadvipa:

Madhyadvipa comprises of “Madhya” (center or middle) & “Dvipa” (island). However, it does not mean that it is the centre most in the bunch of nine islands of Navadvipa dham. Rather, this island has derived its name because Lord Caitanya appeared here around noon time (which is the middle part of the day) being blessed by the austerities of seven sages who were sons of Lord Brahma. Out of the nine processes of devotional services, this island is a depiction of “Smaranam” (remembering the Supreme Lord). This place is also known as “Majidagrama”.

On this Island holds very important pastimes and their temples which can still be seen today.

5. Sri Koladvipa:

Koladvipa is an emblem of “pada-sevanam” or rendering devotional service unto the lotus feet of the Lord. This island is also known as Koladvipa parvata. “Kola” means boar and “Dvipa” means island. It is so called because Lord Varahadeva (an incarnation of the Lord who appeared as a boar to kill the demon Hiranyaksa) appeared at this place in Satya Yuga to bless His devotee. This place is even known as Varaha ksetra. It is said that this place is non-different from Giri Govardhan parvat of Sri Vrindavan dham.

  • Praudha Maya temple.
  • Champahatti.
  • Devananda Gaudiya Matha.

6. Sri Ritudvipa:

This very special place lies in the south-western portion of Koladvipa and is non-different from Khadiravana forest in Vrindavana where Lord Sri Krishna and Balarama had many pastimes and used to rest. Lord Gauranga had many wonderful pastimes here in this most attractive Ratupura. Now I will tell you why this place is called Ritudvipa. Ritu means season. All the six seasons, the rainy season, autumn, hemanta (early winter), winter, spring and summer seasons live here in their personal forms and speak to each other with very sweet words. One says, ‘Sri Krishnacandra will appear in Nadia.’ Another says, ‘The Lord will manifest His wonderful pastimes and increase our happiness with every moment.’ Another season asks, ‘When will that Vrajendra-nandana appear as Gaurahari to multiply our bliss?’ Yet another replies, ‘Narada Muni has announced everywhere that Lord Gaurahari will appear during the first part of Kali-yuga.’ One of them asks, ‘Tell us, what is the time of His incarnation?’ Another one replies, ‘Vasanta-ritu (the spring season) is the most fortunate.’ Vasanta season is very happy to hear this and begins to praise her good fortune. All the seasons (ritus) along with ritu-raja Vasanta (vasanta season, the king of all seasons) started to meditate constantly on the advent of the Lord. All the seasons worshiped the Lord here to fulfil their desires. Therefore, this place was previously known as Ritudvipa. Whoever visits this holy place will become free from all kinds of suffering and will take birth in Nadia to witness the pastimes of the Lord’.

7. Sri Jahnudvipa:

This island, known as Jahnudvipa, is non-different from Bhadravana of Vraja-mandala. At this place Jahnu Muni performed tapasya causing Lord Gauranga to appear in front of him in His golden form. On this Island Bhishma-Tila took place here, Lord Gauranga manifested to Jahnu Muni and the Lila of how the Ganga became known as Jahnavi.

Experience:

  • Bhishma Tila

8. Sri Modadrumadvipa:

This Modadrumadvipa is non-different from Ayodhya. During the previous kalpa when Lord Rama went to live in the forest, He came to this place along with Lakshmana and Sita-devi. They built a cottage under a great banyan tree and stayed there happily for a few days. Upon seeing the effulgence of Navadvipa Sri Raghu nandana Ramacandra smiled.

This island represents dasyam, becoming a servant. Places to visit on this island are:

  • Sri Vrndavana Dasa Thakura’s Sripata
  • Vasudeva Datta’s Sripata
  • Sri Saranga Murari’s Sripata and Aka-tila

9. Sri Rudradvipa:

The village Radupura is situated on the eastern side of the Ganga. Some people also call this place Rudrapura. Rudradvipa is said to be divided into two portions. One portion is on the eastern bank of the Ganga and the other portion is on the western bank. Due to the movement of the Ganga sometimes a portion on the western side of the Ganga moves to the eastern side and vice-versa. Thus, the exact location of various places is difficult to ascertain. Sri Isana Thakura, during his parikrama with Srila Srinivasa Acarya, came to this place and gave the following explanation: “This place is now known as Radupura but previously it was called Rudradvipa. The village of Radupura has since disappeared and now only some uninhabited land remains. I will now tell you why this place was known as Rudradvipa. Sri Rudradeva was very happy within his heart knowing that Sri Gauracandra would appear in Nadia. Rudradeva, along with his followers, became mad while describing the glorious qualities of Lord Gauranga. All around him was the sound vibration of drums and various other instruments. Mahesvara was dancing ecstatically with wonderful bodily movements. By the weight of Rudra’s every step the earth was shaking. This place is very pious because Rudradeva had some pastimes here and therefore it is known as Rudradvipa.

  • Rukunpur.
